How To Overcome Negative Emotions


There are alot of ways to overcome negative emotions.  Negative emotions can affect us in many ways.  They can affect our overall attitude and outlook and interfere with developing strong, healthy relationships with others.  If you want to improve your outlook and your relationships with friends and lovers then you must learn how to overcome negative emotions.  Here are some suggestions:

The first thing you must do (and this will sound cliche) is to accept the fact and admit that you have or are feeling negative emotions.  Many people don't want to be called negative or think that they are.  If you don't fully accept that you are negative and acknowledge that it affects you and your relationships then you won't be successful in overcoming these negative emotions.

Once you have admitted that you have negative emotions then you must commit to yourself that you will overcome them.  This commitment must be a solid one.  You have to be honest in your conviction to overcome negative emotions or you will not be successful. 

The next thing I recommend that you do is to look in the mirror every morning and laugh at yourself.  Sounds stupid right?  Think about this - how many miserable people to do you know that laugh alot?  I don't know many, if any at all.  The majority of people that I know that carry around negative emotions don't laugh alot.  It is hard to feel "negative" when you are laughing.  So if you feel there is nothing that will make you laugh during your day then make a point to laugh at yourself.  Laughter will lead you in the right direction to overcome negative emotions.

Another effective method in overcoming negative emotions is to openly, sincerely and happily say hello to one new person each day.  If you don't like to approach people or engage them in conversation, don't worry.  You don't have to.  Do this in passing.  Don't intend to stop and talk at first.  Just look up at them, smile and give an enthusiastic "hello" and keep on your way.  You'll be surprised at how good it makes you feel and the people you are greeting will soon view you as friendly and happy-go-lucky.

The next thing you can do to overcome negative emotions is to avoid talking about anything negative!  This may be the hardest of them all.  It is so easy to complain and gripe about everything you think is wrong with your life, the world, your work, etc.  It is easy to get caught up in "negative" conversations that someone else is leading off.  Avoid them at all costs.  Change the subject, excuse yourself, do whatever you have to but don't get caught up in negative talk.
